How to Play Typing Trainer

Typing Trainer is a free word-shooting typing game — a typing shooter where you destroy falling words by typing them correctly. This guide covers how to start, what the controls do, how WPM and accuracy are tracked, and how to use the game for typing practice. No download required.

What Is Typing Trainer?

Typing Trainer is a browser-based typing shooter game. Words drift down the screen like enemies; you type each word to destroy it before it reaches your ship. It is one of the free typing games on ztyping and runs entirely in your browser — no install or account needed.

If you want to jump in first and read later, open Typing Trainer and press Start on the title screen.

Getting Started

  1. Open the Typing Trainer game page and wait for the game to load.
  2. On the title screen, press Start or New Game to begin a run.
  3. Type the highlighted word exactly as shown. When you finish a word correctly, your ship fires and the word is cleared.
  4. Keep typing until the wave ends or you lose. Open the in-game menu anytime to pause or check stats.

Objective

Destroy falling word-enemies by typing them correctly before they reach your ship. Each wave draws words from the active word list — the game’s default random words, or custom text you loaded separately via Custom Text.

Controls

  • Keyboard — Type the highlighted word. Backspace removes the last character you typed.
  • Pause & settings — Open the in-game menu to pause, adjust settings, view WPM and accuracy, or use EMP.
  • Fullscreen — Use the Fullscreen button on the game page wrapper (outside the game canvas).

Scoring, WPM, and Accuracy

The game tracks words per minute (WPM) and accuracy during each run. Combos reward consecutive correct words without mistakes — clearing words quickly and accurately pushes your score higher. After a run, check the in-game menu to see how you did.

WPM and accuracy in the game reflect how you perform under pressure while words are falling, not a separate timed test. For context on typical speeds, see our average typing speed guide.

Typing Practice With the Game

Typing Trainer works well for short, focused typing practice sessions. Play a few runs daily to build keyboard familiarity and reaction speed. For material you care about — vocabulary lists, quotes, or study notes — use typing practice with your own text: paste or upload words on the Custom Text page, then return to Typing Trainer to play with that list.

Improving WPM and Accuracy While Playing

The word-shooting format rewards accuracy first. A mistyped character breaks your flow and can end a combo, so focus on typing each word cleanly before chasing speed. Over time, accurate runs naturally raise your WPM because you spend less time correcting mistakes.

  • Accuracy before speed — Slow down on unfamiliar words; speed follows once finger patterns are reliable. See typing accuracy tips for habits that carry into games.
  • Short, regular sessions — Several five-minute runs beat one long session when you are tired and making errors.
  • Home row between words — Return fingers to the home row after each word so the next word starts from a stable position.
  • Read ahead — Glance at the next falling word while you finish the current one so you are not surprised when it becomes active.
  • Track progress over weeks — Compare WPM and accuracy from the in-game menu across sessions rather than expecting instant jumps. For a broader plan, read how to improve typing speed and how long it takes to learn typing.

Tips for Better Runs

  1. Read one word ahead while finishing the current one.
  2. Keep fingers on home row between words.
  3. Use EMP when too many words stack near the bottom.
  4. For harder drills, load your own text via Custom Text.
  5. Beginners can pair the game with typing for beginners before expecting high WPM.
